Pleasant Hill Baptist Church

WELCOME!

Welcome to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

From its humble beginnings in a brush arbor to the change from Methodist to Baptist, and the relocation—God has remained faithful to this church. Our history is still being written here at “The Hill”. Pleasant Hill ministers to people with various backgrounds and diverse walks of life and we are grateful for what God has done through our church. We look forward to seeing what’s next.

Pleasant Hill Baptist Church is a testimony to what Jesus said in Matthew 16:18, “And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

Our History

 The Birth

Many years ago, strong women of faith had a vision and acted on it. Sister Fannie Ward, Sister Vider Terry, Sister Leanna Saucer, and Sister Mary Hill, led by Rev. B. H. Willis, became known as the First A.M.E. Church. The Services were held on the yard of Sister Fannie Ward under a brush arbor. Sister Ola Leach, Sister Mattie Bell Johnson, and Sister Wiley were just a few more of God’s faithful women to join shortly after. These women also played a role in the development of the church. The members’ faithfulness allowed God to manifest His promises.

On April 1, 1957, the church purchased Lot 8 of the John Barrow Addition in Little Rock. The purchase price was $300.00 dollars—with $100.00 down and $27.00 per month payment. In December of 1961, the church purchased Lot 9 for a whopping $10.00. The church then later became known as Pleasant Hill Methodist Church.

A New Foundation.....

in 1980, Rev. Robert Williams began pastoring the church. He made a lot of changes in the church. He updated the furniture, had the church painted, opened a bank account to grow interest, he stopped the selling of dinners and raffle tickets and started the members to tithing, all according to God’s Word. Because the church was Methodist, the members had only been sprinkled and not baptized. Rev. Williams immediately gathered his members and led them to Morning Star Baptist Church to be baptized. From then on the church became known as Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

There’s a leak in this old building...

The Church remained at the location of 4103 Ludwig from April of 1957 to April of 2000.
In January of 2000, God placed this congregation under the leadership of our much beloved Pastor, Rev. G.D. Hughes.

In April of 2000 Rev. Hughes, who was determined and spiritually motivated to continually build upon the well-laid foundation of the men of God who came before him, was blessed by God to relocate Pleasant Hill Baptist Church to our better, current facilities at 6803 Lancaster Rd..
